The Quarters: The Backbone of Your Shoe’s Fit & Shape

The quarters are more than just side panels—they form the entire rear and side structure of the shoe, and their cut directly impacts how the shoe holds its shape, fits the foot, and ages over time. That’s why we follow a strict, material-first approach to every pair we craft.

For leather uppers, we source quarters from the leftover material after cutting the vamps, maximizing material efficiency without compromising quality. A core rule we never compromise on? Cutting “tight to toe.” This technique aligns the leather’s natural stretch resistance toward the toe box, eliminating excessive stretching during lasting that leads to baggy heels, misshapen toes, and loose fits. This rule applies to both full-grain leather and synthetic materials, ensuring consistent performance across every style we produce.

We also tailor our cuts to the unique properties of each hide. Softer, more flexible leather is reserved for the heel area, where it’s reinforced by a stiffener—allowing for comfort without sacrificing structural support. Even natural characteristics of the hide are managed with precision: growth marks in the neck area are aligned to run heel-to-toe, ensuring they never disrupt the shoe’s symmetry or structural performance. Minor, subtle flaws are only placed on the inner quarter, hidden from view, so the exterior of every shoe remains pristine.

The Tongue: Small in Size, Critical to Comfort

Often overlooked, the tongue plays a vital role in fit, comfort, and overall wearability—and our cutting standards reflect that. Just like the quarters, every tongue (regardless of material) is cut “tight to toe.” This prevents the tongue from shifting, warping, or stretching out of shape during wear, keeping it centered on the foot and eliminating the discomfort of a slipping, uneven tongue.

For unlined leather tongues, we take extra care to keep the flesh side of the leather completely clean, ensuring no rough edges or blemishes irritate the wearer’s foot. Flaws or minor imperfections are strategically placed in areas covered by facings and laces, so they never affect the shoe’s appearance or the wearer’s experience. The result is a tongue that stays in place, feels soft against the foot, and maintains its shape for the life of the shoe.

Collars, Bars, Backstraps & Overlays: The Finishing Touches That Add Strength & Style

Every small detail matters, and components like collars, bars, backstraps, and overlays are no exception. These parts add structure, support, and style to the shoe—and our cutting process is designed to enhance all three.

All of these components are cut tight along their length, preventing stretching, sagging, or warping with wear. We use lighter, thinner leathers that are low-stretch and durable, ensuring they add the right amount of support without adding unnecessary bulk. Whether you’re adding a sleek backstrap for heel stability, a padded collar for comfort, or decorative overlays for a signature look, our cuts are engineered to maintain the shoe’s clean lines and long-term performance.
