Stitchmarking is an essential step for preparing components before sewing.
Visible marks are applied to upper components (outers and linings), enabling accurate alignment when parts are sewn together.
Marks can also indicate positions for decorative stitching, punching or trim attachments.
The figure shows a typical stitchmarked upper, with components being stitched and closed.
Although stitchmarking is often viewed as a simple task by inexperienced operators, it is a critical process.
Inaccurate marking can lead to costly production rejects, especially for multi-sectioned uppers. Poor positioning may distort the whole upper, resulting in cracking or splitting after long-term wear due to excessive strain.
Therefore, stitchmarking is fundamental to quality shoemaking and must be carried out with great care.
Standards for Good Stitchmarking
Quality stitch marks must meet these requirements:
Be accurate
Be clearly visible
Remain in place during handling
Not be visible after sections are stitched together (or easily removed from finished footwear if visible)
Types of Stitchmarking Methods
- By Hand
This is the simplest marking method and supports the widest range of materials.
Marks are made using a handheld marker pen through slots cut into a template laid over the component.
Templates are generally manufactured from hard board, similar to seatboard materials.
Disadvantages of manual stitchmarking:
The accuracy depends entirely on the operator placing the template correctly on the component.
The area around template slots can quickly become contaminated with ink, which may stain shoe parts. Templates therefore require regular cleaning.
The process is labour-intensive and limited in marking precision.
At My Sample Factory, we implement standardized stitchmarking procedures for all shoe samples and bulk production.
We offer both template hand marking and silk screen marking solutions, strictly controlling marking accuracy to avoid deformation, rejects and material staining.
Whether you develop leather boots, casual shoes or complex multi-panel footwear, our precise pre-sewing marking ensures consistent assembly quality for every pair.
